Ulterior, a regizat filme precum The Place Promised in Our Early Days (2004), 5 Centimeters per Second (2007), Children Who Chase Lost Voices (2011) si The Garden of Words (2013). In 2016, a regizat Your Name, o senzatie internationala si un fenomen social in Japonia, si Weathering with You in 2019, care a stabilit recordul de incasari in acel an in Japonia. In noiembrie 2022 a fost lansat in Japonia cel mai recent film al sau, Suzume.
